ERIC PETERSON FIGURE PAINTING WORKSHOP

The Bakersfield Art Association is sponsoring a two-day figure painting workshop with noted Central Coast artist, Eric Peterson. The workshop will be held at the Gallery of Art in the East Hills Mall on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. There will be demonstrations and painting from live, clothed models. RICHARD GEISSEL ART ON DISPLAY AT DAGNY'S COFFEE CO.

The Bakersfield Art Association is pleased to announce the featured artist for the month of June at Dagny’s Coffee Co. is Richard Geissel. Richard works primarily in acrylics and among his favorite subjects to paint are local business signs. He has won numerous awards including five from the Kern County Fair. A variety of subjects will be on display at Dagny’s including some of his sign paintings.

MICHELLE STONE ART ON DISPLAY AT RUSSO'S BOOKS

The Bakersfield Art Association is pleased to announce the featured artist for the month of June at Russo’s Books at the Marketplace is Michelle Stone. Michelle is primarily a self-taught artist and has been painting professionally since 1995. She is known for her highly-detailed and lifelike wall murals and decorative accents. ERIC PETERSON GUEST ARTIST

The guest artist at the Bakersfield Art Association’s Gallery of Art from June 3 through August 3 is Eric Peterson. This retired college art instructor from the Central Coast taught for 30 years at Pasadena City College. In addition, he has been a free-lance illustrator for 35 years and some of his clients include the Library of Congress, Mercedes Benz, IBM, AT&T, American Airlines and numerous book publishers. His lovely oil and acrylic paintings can be viewed at the Gallery of Art in the East Hills Mall from 11:00 – 5:00 p.m. daily except Mondays.

PAINTING WORKSHOP WITH CHARLOTTE WHITE

Paint in the style of a French Impressionist as you tackle a Bakersfield street scene with the local dean of this genre, Charlotte White. The workshop’s goal is to sketch using perspective and then create a finished street scene in one day. Instruction will be in oil, but all mediums are welcome. Workshop will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in front of the Fox Theater. Cost is $30 for BAA members and $40 for non-members. For more information call 872-2806.

ART SHOW AT BEACH PARK

The Bakersfield Art Association is sponsoring an art show at Beach Park, corner of Oak and 24^th street, on Saturday, May 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Artists from the BAA will have works on display and for sale in a variety of mediums and subjects. This show has become a tradition over the years and provides a great opportunity to appreciate our local artists’ many talents.

FREE ART DEMONSTRATION

Deanna Nelson will be the special guest of the Bakersfield Art Association at the Gallery of Art at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. This inspiring teacher will offer a demonstration of her techniques working with acrylic paints. Deanna taught painting at Bakersfield College for a number of years and has won numerous awards. There is no charge and the public is invited to attend. The Gallery is located at the East Hills Mall near the southeast entrance.

The Bakersfield Art Association is sponsoring a Patriotic Art Exhibit and Competition at their Gallery of Art. This is a juried show and all artwork selected will be featured in the gallery from April 29 through June 1. The exhibit will consist of original paintings, collage, mixed media, sculpture, and much more. Ribbons and/or monetary awards will be offered. RICHARD GEISSEL

How did his desire to learn painting land Richard Geissel in Germany? Let’s back up a bit. Richard was encouraged to draw as a child and as a young adult enjoyed working with pen and ink and took occasional classes. That could have been the extent of his art career except for a short visit to the coast one day. Richard saw some incredible paintings on display in a local store and asked about the artist. When he discovered the artist lived nearby, Richard called on him and inquired about lessons. That was the beginning of a student/mentor relationship which would continue for years.

Richard drove from Bakersfield to the coast on a regular basis absorbing as much as he could from this gifted teacher until the teacher moved to Germany. Richard was determined to continue his lessons and made two separate trips to Germany to continue his training. That training has paid off many times over. Richard has sold hundreds of paintings throughout his career and has paintings in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

When you see his paintings on display at the Gallery of Art, you might assume Richard is a full-time artist--but that is not the case. He currently works as a piping designer and only paints in his spare time.

Richard works primarily in acrylics and among his favorite subjects to paint are local business signs. He has won numerous awards. He entered the Kern County Fair five times and walked away with five awards. He once sold a 12” X 16” painting of an oil field pumping unit for $600. As they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”!

Richard told me he paints for relaxation and enjoyment and encourages anyone who can be persistent to give it a try. The next time you are in the area, stop by the Gallery of Art at the East Hills Mall and take at look at his unique artwork.

PAUL BUXMAN OIL PAINTING WORKSHOP

The Bakersfield Art Association is sponsoring a one-day outdoor painting workshop with noted valley artist Paul Buxman on Saturday, April 5. Mr. Buxman has been farming and painting in the San Joaquin Valley for over 40 years. His luminous paintings of farms, mountains and central valley scenes hang in public and private collections throughout the United States. Mr. Buxman will be instructing in oil, but other mediums are welcome. Cost is $40 for BAA members and $50 for non-members. Call 872-2806 for more information.
