A recent phenomenon in the world of law enforcement is the red light camera at busy intersections. I have to admit that I was highly intimidated by one that was installed at an intersection I drive through every day. When it first appeared, I didn’t know whether to smile and drive like a maniac, hit the brakes and freak out the driver behind me or take a chance and drive through like I knew precisely what I was doing. I chose the latter but take a deep breath every time I approach the intersection.
I saw some statistics on wrecks that occurred before and after installation of the cameras. It was broken down into rear-end events and “other.” Rear end events increased. That’s because the average driver is not going to take a chance on a mug shot by a camera mounted on a steel post. The result is something like a $300 ticket. Most of us don’t want to risk getting that little missile in the mail...
