What’s happening in the Southwest area and Bakersfield as a whole? On Aug. 18, Praise Chapel of Bakersfield, 4001 Hahn Ave., hosted the second annual Back-2-School Celebration. We served 150 needy kindergarten through 12th-grade students with school supplies, and backpacks were given for those in greatest need. Over 200 people stopped by and ate a free hog dog, chips, and a drink at Patriots Park. There were also many singers, musicians, a dancer and a rap group called REST who came to entertain and bring forth the love of God. Pastor Jeff also spoke on the importance of community and family and the need for God. The goal was to make sure many children went to school happy, proud and ready to succeed for this coming school year. Pencils, paper, folders, crayons, a good backpack and other such items can make a big difference for a low-income or underprivileged child. We were able to help local families who had no means to meet their kids’ school needs. Such families...
