Using only pencils and a mirror, Tevis Junior High eighth-grader Esther Han crafted a realistic and intricately detailed self-portrait to win the Kern County Fair Children’s Art Contest sweepstakes trophy. Her achievement was announced Sept. 27 at an awards ceremony inside Harvest Hall at the fairgrounds. The award honors the best-of-the-best in the annual competition, sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office. The competition is designed to promote and showcase art created by public school children in preschool through eighth grade. Han drew the picture as a seventh-grader. First-place blue ribbons were awarded in the special education category and for each grade level.
