Although most schools across the Golden State are closed for the summer, much work is taking place behind the scene as district office personnel are engaged in teacher recruitment activities to ensure that all classes have a qualified teacher when the fall term begins. Contributing to the problem is teacher retention. Research showing a direct link between good teachers and academic achievement makes it important that good teachers are hired and retained. Estimates vary, but approximately 20 percent of our nation’s teachers leave the teaching profession in the first five years, many after their first year.Although many leave for financial reasons, others leave due to frustrations over student behavior that hinder them from being successful in the classroom.
