The fourth annual Kern County High School Powerlifting Meet was held Saturday, April 29, and featured strong showings from Southwest students, including Stockdale's Kenny Shanahan as best lifter in the junior/senior division with a total of 1,380 pounds. More than 175 boys from 11 county and three out-of-town high schools came to compete in the squat, bench press and dead lift at Stockdale High School. Coach Dave Boyt and his crew have hosted this event for four years.Students competed in the frosh/soph or junior/senior divisions in specific weight classes. Medals were awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in each weight class. Best lifter awards were given for each of the two divisions. This award is given based on total weight lifted, factoring in body weight. The best lifter in the frosh/soph division was Golden Valley's Brian Morris with 920 pounds in the 148-pound weight class.Schools also competed as teams.
